“April showers bring May flowers.” As we head into the month of April, it is important to be aware of the weather that the changing seasons can bring. Rain may be great for plant growth and washing away pollen, but driving in the rain is a whole other story.
Studies suggest that rain is actually more dangerous to drive in than snow. Out of all weather-related automobile accidents each year, 70% occur due to wet pavements and 46% of that total number occur during rainfall itself. With these statistics, make sure you take the proper precautions to stay safe.
Safety Tips for Wet Weather Driving
#1 Vehicle Maintenance
Car maintenance is important anyways. What a lot of people might not realize though is that your car works harder when driving in the rain. Therefore, it is important to make sure you are up to date with needed maintenance. Low tire pressure and bad brakes are two of the factors that could add to already dangerous driving conditions with rain.
It is recommended to check air pressure for your tires every month. Brake pads can last anywhere between 25,000 miles and 60,000 miles. Because of such a wide window, it is recommended to have your brakes checked every time you get an oil change. This includes having the brake pads inspected, fluid levels checks, and checking the brake rotors as well.
#2 Crusie Control
While Cruise Control might be a convenient feature for any other trip, you want to make sure this option is disabled when driving in the rain. Hydroplaning can occur at speeds as low as 35 mph. If Cruise Control is turned on this can increase your risk of hydroplaning because it keeps your car going at a specific speed.
If you do hydroplane, whether Cruise Control is a factor or not, remember the two most important steps when reacting. Do not slam on your brakes. Turn your wheel in the direction the vehicle is spinning. A lot of people’s first reaction when feeling like they are losing control of their vehicle is to slam on the brakes. With hydroplaning you actually want to let off the accelerator slowly without braking. Also remember to turn your wheel in the direction the car is spinning. Turning your wheel in the opposite direction, especially quickly, can make your car flip.
#3 Slow Down
This seems like such an obvious tip, but it is one that many people don’t follow. Everybody is in a rush and we all have places to be. Let’s make sure that we all get there safely. Leave early to give yourself more time on your trip. Slow down and remember it is more important to get where you are going safely than to get there on time.
If you are on winding roads, stay alert and be aware that rainy conditions can make these turns even more dangerous. Slow down. Drive smart. Stay aware of road signs that indicate how roads may be affected when wet. Adjust your driving accordingly. There are steps you can take to keep your trip safe even if the conditions are more dangerous.
